How to Change a C5 Headlight Motor

Although the lowering and raising headlights on the C5 Corvette enhance the style of the vehicle, they can be a hazard when the electric motor that moves the headlights fails and the headlights remain in a lowered position. In this case, the driver receives no benefits from having headlights. Replacing the motor, then, is a crucial fix. The design of the front end of the C5 facilitates changing the motor. No special tools are needed and no extraneous parts have to be removed. Expect the entire job to take less than 30 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench set
  • Screwdriver
  • Epoxy
  • Replacement C5 headlight motor
  • Turn off the C5 if it was on, then prop open the hood.

  • Raise the headlight assembly that has the non-functioning motor, manually.

  • Check whether glue or three visible screws secure the headlight motor cover in place. Remove the three screws if you see them. Otherwise, pry the cover off with your screwdriver.

  • Remove the push-pin connectors holding the black plastic shroud over the headlight assembly. Pull off the plastic shroud.

  • Use the wrench to remove the three bolts securing the headlight motor to the side of the headlight assembly.

  • Press in on the top tab of the headlight motor harness with the screwdriver to release the wiring harness from the headlight motor.

  • Place the new headlight motor on the mounting bracket and secure it in place with the three bolts you removed earlier. Plug back in the headlight motor wiring harness. Replace the headlight motor cover with the three screws or glue it back on at the mating surface points with your epoxy.
