How do I Replace a Falcon Drive Belt?

In the 1960s, when the Ford Falcon was produced, Ford did not utilize idler pulleys to maintain tension on the drive belts because, back then, the drive belts drove a lot less. In the case of the Falcon, the drive belt drove the water pump, the fan and the alternator off the crankshaft pulley. Because the Falcon does not have an idler pulley, replacing the belt becomes slightly tricky as you have to loosen the alternator to loosen tension on the belt.

Things You'll Need

  • Pen and paper
  • Socket set
  • Pry bar
  • Draw a picture of the pulleys on the engine and denote which side of the pulley the belt runs against. This will help you when putting the belt back onto the engine.

  • Loosen the through bolt on the top of the alternator using a socket and ratchet.

  • Loosen the pivot bolt located on the bottom of the alternator using a socket and ratchet.

  • Push down on the alternator to loosen the drive belt.

  • Remove the drive belt from the pulleys on the engine and then place the new belt over the pulleys using the diagram you drew.

  • Place a pry bar between the bracket the alternator mounts to and the bottom of the alternator casing.

  • Push down on the pry bar handle to tighten the drive belt. Tighten the through bolt and the pivot bolt using the socket and ratchet while you maintain pressure on the drive belt.
