How to Repair the Keyless Entry on a GMC

General Motors, or GMC, is the auto manufacturer of dozens of vehicles, including the Yukon, Sierra and the Acadia. GMC's late-model vehicles are all equipped with keyless entry remotes, which allow you to lock and unlock your car doors via remote rather than using your key in the door locks. Keyless entry is a real convenience to drivers. Imagine having to unlock your car doors manually in the dark, rainy parking lot of the grocery store with your toddler in your arms. Unfortunately, your keyless entry remote might stop working. If this happens, you can try a common fix before you have to contact GMC.

  • Change the battery in your keyless entry remote. According to a GMC service mechanic, this is a common problem GMC mechanics see.

  • Visit your local auto parts store. Provide an employee with the model and year of your GMC and wait while he locates the correct battery for your keyless entry remote.

  • Purchase your new battery. Use a sharp tool such as a knife or thin screwdriver to gently pop open the two halves of your keyless entry remote control. Remove the old battery, replace it with the new battery and pop the two pieces of your remote back together. Try your remote. According to GMC, this is the most common fix. If your new battery doesn't fix your keyless entry remote, it is recommended that you call your local GMC dealership to speak with someone in the service department.
