How to Replace a 2005 Dodge Neon Speed Sensor

The 2005 Dodge Neon's speed sensor is located on the transmission. The vehicle speed sensor counts the revolutions of the transmission output shaft over a certain time frame to determine speed. It is used to communicate vehicle speed to the computer, regulate cruise control and control transmission shifts. It also provides the computer with information so that it can regulate or operate other sensors and functions, such as the idle air control and the canister purge cycle.

Things You'll Need

  • Set of sockets
  • Unplug the wiring harness connector on the vehicle speed sensor.

  • Remove the one retaining bolt that holds the speed sensor onto the transmission. Pull the speed sensor out of the transmission.

  • Insert the new vehicle speed sensor. Insert the retaining bolt and tighten it firmly. Plug in the wiring harness connector.
