How to Remove an Inner Fender

You might want to remove an inner fender to do some body work on the outer fender. The only way to reach the backside of the actual fender is to remove the inner fender and the fender well on a vehicle. The inner fender helps keep excessive water off the underside of the actual fender, which helps keep it from rusting out quickly. Inner fenders might be painted with a rust-repellent, much like the undercoating on the car, and are usually black.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Set of sockets
  • Release any wiring from brackets that might be on the fender well. Remove the bolts from the fender well, using the appropriate socket. Pull the fender well away from the fender or, if that doesn't afford you enough room to get your hands in to reach the upper, inner fender well bolts, just lift the fender well out of the vehicle. If you need to remove the entire fender well, just make sure nothing on the fender well is attached to the body or engine. Unplug it, if so.

  • Jack up the vehicle on the side you are working on, using the floor jack, then support it with jack stands. Reach under the fender and remove all the bolts along the edge of the inner fender well, using the appropriate socket.

  • Remove the bolts holding the fender to the vehicle, using the appropriate socket. Bolts are located against the firewall and near the front of the fender, where it meets with the core support or the frame. Lift the fender off the vehicle. Lift the inner fender off the vehicle.
