One Side of the Headlights Won't Work on My 2003 Ford Expedition

The headlights on your 2003 Ford Expedition are very important for the safety of your vehicle. If only one of your headlights is working, your road vision will be diminished and you may receive a traffic violation. It is important to repair the headlight as quickly as possible. The three most common issues afflicting headlights are old fuses, old bulbs and loose electrical connections. All three have simple solutions that only require a few minutes to perform.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Replacement bulbs
  • Replacement 10A/20A fuses

Electrical Connection and Bulb

  • Turn the headlamp control switch to the "Off" position and open and secure the Expedition's hood. Remove the two headlight assembly retainer bolts, located at the back of the headlamp assembly, with a socket wrench, turning counterclockwise.

  • Loosen the vertical bolt on the backside of the headlamp assembly, but do not remove it. Slide the assembly forward to expose the bulb and electrical connector. Pull the electrical connector. If it comes out, reinsert it and securely plug it into the rear of the assembly until it clicks into place. If the light is still not working, you may need to replace the bulb.

  • Pull off the bulb covers from the rear of the assembly.Reach into the assembly and turn the bulbs counterclockwise to remove them. Replace the top low-beam bulb with a 9005-type bulb and the bottom high-beam bulb with a 9006-type bulb.

  • Place the covers back on the assembly and place the assembly back into the vehicle. Reattach the three bolts, turning clockwise with the socket wrench, and close the hood.

Fuses

  • Open the Expedition's driver's-side door and locate the fuse panel under the right side of the steering wheel. Remove the fuse panel cover by squeezing the "PULL" tab and pulling it off the fuse panel. Underneath the cover, you will find a fuse extractor.

  • Locate the fuses numbered "23," "25" and "35." The "23" fuse powers the right-hand, low-beam headlight, The "25" fuse powers the left-hand, low-beam headlight, and the "35" is for the high-beam headlights. Inspect each fuse to see if they are broken. If the metal rod inside of the fuse is snapped or in pieces, the fuse is broken.

  • Use the fuse extractor to remove and replace broken fuses. The "23" and "25" fuses require 10A fuses and the "35" uses a 20A fuse. Place the cover back onto the fuse panel and close the door.
