How to Replace Backup Lights on a 2003 Impala

The backup lamps on your 2003 Chevrolet Impala are located in the applique on the rear of the trunk lid. The backup lamp replacement process involves removing the applique to access the bulbs. The entire process is relatively simple and straightforward and only requires the use of a socket wrench and a replacement backup lamp bulb. The Impala's backup lamps use 921 type bulbs, which can be purchased at most auto parts shops.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Replacement 921 type bulb
  • Turn off the Impala's engine and open the trunk. Use a socket wrench to remove the nine nuts from the underside of the trunk.

  • Pull the rear trunk applique away from the vehicle. This will reveal the sockets on the trunk lid. Remove the socket by pressing down on the socket tab and rotating the socket counterclockwise and pulling it out.

  • Pull the old bulb out of the socket. Do not twist the old bulb. Install the new bulb into the socket. Be sure to not touch the glass portion of the replacement bulb.

  • Reinstall the socket into the assembly. Tighten the socket by twisting it clockwise.

  • Place the applique back onto the trunk lid and reattach it by reinstalling all nine nuts. Close the trunk.
