Most steering wheels have a few inches of play in the movement, but as the vehicle ages, the amount of play increases. The steering box, located just inside the engine along the steering column on the driver's side, is a crucial element in maintaining your vehicle's stability on the road. The steering box in the 1960 Ford F-100 operates the same as almost every model since that date. You will have to replace the unit at some point, but adjusting the steering box will prolong the life of the unit.
Straighten the wheels on the vehicle.
Loosen the bolt surrounding the adjustment screw located on the top-center of the steering box.
Loosen the screw so that you can adjust the steering wheel. Adjust the steering wheel so that it is positioned correctly (the center emblem is level). Double-check the wheels to make sure they did not turn. Loosen the screw a little more and correct the wheel alignment if necessary.
Tighten the screw down slowly. Return it to the original position and continue past approximately one-half turn. Check the play in the steering wheel. Continue to tighten by half turns until you achieve the desired level of play in the wheel.
Tighten the bolt down on the adjustment screw. Start the vehicle and test drive. Repeat the process as necessary.
