How to Put a Rear View Mirror on a Windshield

Your rear view mirror is an essential part of your vehicle. Without the mirror, you cannot accurately determine the location of the cars behind you as you drive. You can also suffer legal penalties if you drive without your rear view mirror. If your mirror falls off you can reattach it fairly easily.

Things You'll Need

  • Rear view mirror kit
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Wash the residue off the part of the rear view mirror that connects to the window (known as the "button"). Rubbing alcohol should remove any of the remaining adhesive on the button. Rub the alcohol on the windshield as well to remove any adhesive residue.

  • Detach the button from the back of the windshield. This makes it much easier to work with the button as you attempt to reattach the mirror.

  • Mark the location where you will hang the rear view mirror on the windshield. Use a piece of tape to mark the location for the mirror. Place the tape on the outside of the windshield so that it does not interfere with the review mirror adhesive.

  • Squeeze the bottle labeled "activator" that comes with the rear view mirror reattachment kit. The activator has two sections that will mix when you squeeze the bottle. Open the activator tube and spread it over the button of the rear view mirror and the windshield where you will attach the mirror.

  • Place a drop of adhesive on the center of the button after the activator has dried for two minutes. Add another drop of adhesive to the side of the button that attaches to the glass. Press the button of the mirror onto the windshield (at the place indicated by the piece of tape) and hold it in place until it dries.

  • Snap the rest of the rear view mirror onto the button. Do not hang anything from the mirror until the adhesive has had at least 8 hours to bond itself to the windshield.
