How to Reset the Security System on a 2002 Chevy Malibu

The security system on a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu was designed to prevent theft of the vehicle by drawing attention to the vehicle in the event of a break-in. When the body control module senses an unauthorized user entering the vehicle it sounds the horn in one-second bursts for one minute. At the one-minute mark, it sounds the horn in two-second bursts and flashes the headlights for one additional minute. Occasionally, the security system will become frozen or inoperable and must be reset. The keyless remote and the ignition key are required to reset the security system.

Things You'll Need

  • Keyless entry remote
  • Ignition key
  • Turn the engine off and shift the transmission into park. Apply the emergency brake and exit the vehicle. Stand near the driver's door.

  • Press and hold both the lock and unlock buttons on the keyless remote for approximately 10 seconds--until the horn honks one time and the headlights also flash once at the same time.

  • Enter the vehicle and place the key into the ignition. Turn the ignition to the "On" position and allow it to sit for 30 seconds without starting the vehicle.

  • Start the engine and drive the vehicle normally. The security system is now reset.
