Auto AC Repair Troubleshooting

Fixing an air conditioning problem with your car can be very expensive. When an A/C system needs repair or maintenance it can be a simple problem or more complicated. Troubleshooting a car's A/C system and finding the problem yourself will save lots of money if you are able to fix what is wrong.

Things You'll Need

  • A/C fuses
  • Can of Freon
  • Open the fuse box and replace the fuse for the A/C unit. The fuse box can be underneath the hood on the driver's side, or on the bottom of the dash, below the steering wheel. Each fuse box has a diagram that will tell you what fuse goes to the car's air conditioning system.

  • Recharge the car's A/C with Freon. You can recharge the car's system yourself with a kit that can be found at a department store or mechanic shop. Be sure to check the user's manual for the car to determine how much and what kind of Freon your car will need.

  • Place the Freon hose on the pressure port on the air conditioner compressor.

  • Open the release valve on the can, allow the Freon to flow into the system and close the release valve. Some cars may need more than one can; check the car's user manual to be sure.

  • Turn the car on and start the A/C. Start out with the air conditioner on low and then slowly adjust the settings until the A/C is set to high. This will circulate the new Freon throughout the car's air conditioning system.
