How to Replace a Headlamp on a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix

Driving a vehicle with faulty headlights is very dangerous. It can seriously impair your vision when driving at night and lead to an accident. Most faulty headlights are easily fixed by replacing the headlight bulb, which is also true for the headlights on the 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. Replacing the 9005 headlight bulb is a simple process that does not take more than a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper towels
  • Replacement 9005 headlight bulb
  • Turn off the Grand Prix's engine and open the hood.

  • Locate the plastic retainer clip under the hood. It should be right next to the headlamp assembly unit. Pull up half-way on the plastic retainer clip while simultaneously pushing back on the headlamp. Line up the square marker on the plastic retainer clip with the groove on the headlamp unit.

  • Pull the headlamp assembly unit out of the vehicle. Wiggling the headlamp unit up and down while pulling may help with pulling it out of the vehicle.

  • Rotate the headlight bulb socket ring one-quarter of a counterclockwise turn to remove it from the headlamp unit. The three bulb-socket rings are located on the back of the headlight assembly unit. The headlight bulb socket ring is the second-largest one.

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket by pulling on it. Use a paper towel to grab the replacement bulb. Install the new bulb by pushing it into the assembly unit. Replace the headlight bulb socket ring and rotate it one-quarter of a clockwise turn to lock it into place.

  • Place the headlight assembly unit back into place and push down on the plastic retainer clip to lock it into place. Close the hood.
