How to Reset Nissan Maintenance Messages

When your Nissan is displaying a maintenance message, or "check engine" light, repairing the problem that caused the light to illuminate is not always enough to reset or turn off the message. If the light remains on even after a repair has been completed, you can reset it by disconnecting the battery.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Pop the hood of your Nissan to expose the engine and battery compartment.

  • Find the battery on the far right of the engine compartment and determine which terminal of the battery is negative. This will be distinguished either by the black color label or "-" sign next to it.

  • Use your pliers to remove the nut that keeps the power cord connected to the battery terminal.

  • Pull the power cable off the battery terminal. This will disconnect your Nissan's computer from its battery power source. Once the computer shuts down, the preexisting maintenance messages will be reset.

  • Reconnect the negative cable to the battery and tighten down the nut to keep it in place.
