The oil and filter should be changed on a 2005 Harley Davidson every 3,000 miles. Since a Harley Davidson is air-cooled, the weight of the oil depends on location and climate. Harley oil comes in 50, 60 and 70 weight. The warmer the climate, the higher the weight oil you need. Harley also requires a special oil filter with a bypass. Failure to use the correct oil filter will cause the cam bearings to fail.
Place the drain pan under the oil tank. Place the oil funnel with the hose under the drain plug. Loosen the drain plug with the 5/8-inch socket. Remove it the rest of the way by hand and let the plug fall into the funnel.
Remove the oil cap to drain the oil faster. Install the drain plug and tighten when the oil stops flowing.
Place the drain pan under the rear of the engine. Locate the 5/8-inch drain plug and remove it. Allow the oil to drain into the pan. Clean any metal off the drain plug. Place a new O-ring on the plug. Install the plug and tighten securely.
Remove the oil filter using the oil filter wrench. Pour a small amount of oil into the oil filter. Place a small amount of oil on the sealing ring. Install the new oil filter. Fill the oil tank with 3 quarts of oil.
Start the motorcycle and check for leaks. Check the low oil pressure light and make sure it is off.
