The motor mounts in a Volkswagen Passat hold the motor in place and help to eliminate some of the stress that running can place on the drive train. They accomplish this through the use of a rubber element that can wear thin over time. When this happens, the motor mount should be replaced. Replacing the motor mount is a fairly routine repair that most car owners can complete themselves, as long as they have the right tools.
Apply the parking brake, pop the hood of the car and remove the ground wire from the negative terminal of the battery.
Use the jack to lift the front end of the vehicle and place jack stands under the car. Carefully lower the jack until the car is resting on the jack stands and remove the jack.
Chock the rear tires, using the wheel blocks, to prevent the car from rolling.
Place the jack under the transmission housing and place the small block of wood between the jack and the housing, to help protect the transmission housing. Raise the jack slowly until the block of wood is firmly against the housing.
Use the 17 mm wrench or socket to remove the bolts on the mount housing and then use the jack to raise the motor slightly, providing enough room to allow the old mount to be removed, and the new mount to be installed.
Remove the old mount and insert the new one, lowering the engine slowly until the mount housing is in the position needed to re-install the bolts.
Tighten the bolts using the 17 mm wrench or socket, remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle. Once the vehicle has been lowered, remove the wheel blocks and reconnect the negative battery cable.
