How do I Replace the Headlamp Bulb on a 2003 Jeep Cherokee?

Many car owners like to do their own vehicle maintenance, but remember to check your lights while you are going through your checklist. You can replace a bad headlight yourself without any special tools, and it only takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Changing your own headlight in your 2003 Cherokee can save you a few dollars and you won't have to wait around the repair shop.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • 6" extension
  • 7 mm socket
  • 9006 Headlight bulb (Low Beam) or
  • 9005 Headlight bulb (High Beam)
  • Open the hood and remove the screw with the 7mm head securing the headlight housing. It's a long screw above the headlight housing.

  • Grab the upper inside and the lower outside corners of the headlight housing and pull straight forward. You will have to pull hard, because there are three ball studs holding the housing in place.

  • Remove the socket from the housing, remove the bulb from the socket, replace it with the new bulb and install the socket in the housing. Do not touch the glass part of the bulb.

  • Put the housing back in place, line up the ball studs and push firmly until the studs are in place. You should feel them pop into the grommets.

  • Secure the housing in place with the screw.
