How to Install a Starter Relay on a Dodge

The starter relay on a Dodge is designed to energize when the ignition is turned to the "START" position. When the ignition is in the "START" position the relay closes and provides power to the positive voltage side of the starter. When this relay is faulty the vehicle will not start. The starter relay is not user-repairable and must be replaced with a new or remanufactured relay. Replacement relays are available from most auto parts stores and Dodge dealerships.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement starter relay
  • 8 mm battery terminal wrench

Instructions

  • Turn off the engine and place the gear selector in the "P" position. Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal using the battery terminal wrench.

  • Find the under-hood relay center. It is located near the battery next to the under-hood fuse block.

  • Remove the cover from the relay center. Note the location of the starter relay as shown on the underside of the relay center cover. Pull out the starter relay.

  • Install the new starter relay and replace the cover on the relay center.

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the vehicle to ensure proper operation.
