How to Repair Windshield Wipers

Purchasing new windshield wiper blades can be quite costly--especially on today's vehicles, which have longer and more expensive blades. Repairing your existing wiper blades is a relatively simple process and is often more cost-effective. You can purchase the parts and tools needed for this job at your local automotive parts retailer. Repairing wiper blades should take about 30 minutes to complete, even if you've never repaired wipers before.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • New wiper blade rubber inserts
  • Side cutters or shears
  • Remove the wiper from the wiper arm by pressing on the tab at the center of the wiper blade, which attaches to the wiper arm. Slide the wiper down toward the bottom of the wiper arm to remove it.

  • Remove the rubber insert on your wiper blade by pulling it out of the blade structure or frame. Measure the replacement rubber and cut it to fit the wiper blade frame, using side cutters. Slide the new rubber into the wiper blade frame until it locks into place at the other end. There are little metal tabs that grab the wiper blade and hold it to the wiper blade frame.

  • Reinstall the wipers onto the wiper arm. Make sure you hear the snap or popping noise so you know that your wiper is secure to the arm. Turn on your windshield washer sprayers and test the new blades for efficiency and function.
