How to Change the Shocks on a 2003 GMC Envoy

Replacing the shocks on your 2003 Envoy can save you money and is a great project for the home mechanic. The Envoy uses standard shocks on the rear, but has a McPherson strut assembly on the front of the truck. The struts require several special tools to remove, but the shocks on the rear can be changed with standard hand tools and replacement shocks are available from any auto parts retailer.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Socket set
  • Ratchet
  • Place a jack under the rear differential and raise your Envoy off the ground. Position a set of jack stands under the rear axle of the truck and lower the jack until the truck is resting securely on the stands.

  • Remove the lower mounting bolt from the shock mount using a ratchet and socket, then pull the bolt out of the shock. Set the bolt aside for reuse later.

  • Remove the upper shock mounting bolt from the shock mount with a socket and ratchet, pull the bolt out of the shock and remove the shock from the truck. Position a new shock into the upper mount, insert the mounting bolt and torque the bolt to 63 lb.-feet with a torque wrench.

  • Swing the bottom of the shock into the lower mount then insert the lower mounting bolt. Torque the bolt to 63 lb.-feet with a torque wrench. Repeat the process on the opposite side of the truck.

  • Raise the rear of the truck off the jack stands with a jack then remove the stands from under the truck. Lower the jack, setting the truck on the ground. Remove the jack from under the truck.
