Scratches deep enough to catch your fingernail on when running it across the glass mean only one thing: you must replace the glass to remove the scratch. If your Pontiac Sunfire door window glass has a deep scratch or is chipped, cracked or otherwise damaged, replacement is the only real answer. While the glass itself is expensive, you can save the labor charge by replacing the piece yourself if you have basic mechanical aptitude and a few hours of free time.
Remove the five screws at the bottom and on the sides of the door panel using the Phillips screwdriver. Pry the window switch bezel out with the trim tool and then disconnect the wiring harness from the switch by hand.
Pry the trim pins in the back side of the panel loose from the door with the trim tool. Grab the leading and trailing edge of the door panel and carefully lift the door panel up and off the door.
Unbolt the window regulator from the bottom of the window glass, using the socket set. Lift the glass up and out of the door by hand. Set the glass aside and then compare the replacement glass to the old glass to make sure they’re identical in design.
Slide the new glass down into the door carefully and wedge it in place using the plastic window shim, which you can purchase at most auto-part stores. The shim should slide in between the outer window wipe and the glass.
Bolt the new glass to the window regulator, using the socket set. Reinstall the door panel in reverse of how you removed it.
