2000 Toyota Camry Ignition Switch Removal

If the ignition switch in your car fails, it will not start or run the vehicle. The switch in your 2000 Toyota Camry is a bit more difficult to replace than in some other vehicles because you must pull the steering wheel to access it. You can purchase a replacement switch from most auto-parts stores. They may also rent you a steering wheel puller to you so you don't need to buy a tool you are unlikely to need in the future.

Things You'll Need

  • Torx driver
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set, metric
  • Steering wheel puller 09950-50011 or equivalent
  • Turn the steering wheel so the wheels point straight ahead. Turn the key to the "Off" position.

  • Remove the plugs that cover the screws on the back of the steering wheel. Back out the two screws with a Torx driver. Gently remove the air bag pad from the front of the steering wheel. Disconnect the electrical connector behind it without putting any strain on the wires.

  • Remove the nut from the center of the steering wheel. Attach a steering wheel puller and tighten it against the shaft to remove the wheel.

  • Remove the upper and lower covers from the steering column. Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the switch. Turn the key to the "ACC" position and pull to remove the cylinder.

  • Remove the screw that holds the switch in place and remove the switch.
