Homemade Tire Bead Seating Tool

While there are many ways to seat a tire on a rim, there are limited ways in which to do it at home. A proficient do-it-yourselfer will always find a way to get something done, and it is usually done without the traditional tools. Using hammers, tire irons and other tools makes a tough job seem even tougher, but there are ways to seat a tire that don't require a seasoned lumberjack.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal bar or strong stick of wood
  • Rope
  • Place the rope around the center tread of the tire. Attach the ends of the rope to the metal bar or stick of wood. Wrap some of the rope around the bar or stick so it is secure.

  • Begin turning the bar or stick in a circular motion, twisting the rope and causing the center of the tire to squeeze in and push the tire bead out.

  • Apply firm pressure on the rope and begin inflating the tire.

  • Untwist the rope as soon as the bead of the tire seals and the tire starts to inflate. Finish inflating the tire to the required pressure.
