How to Repair a Buick Instrument Cluster

The instrument cluster lights on a Buick are used to brighten the instrument panel at night or in poor visibility. If some of the instrument lights stop working correctly, it can cause safety issues such as not knowing how fast you are going. If this occurs you should replace the lights immediately. You can pick up replacement bulbs are your local auto store.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Replacement bulbs
  • Locate the edges of the instrument panel, which should be highlighted by either a rubber or plastic cowl trim around the edges.

  • Use a phillips-head screwdriver to remove the two screws which hold the cowl trim in place. Carefully pull the trim from the dashboard, taking care not to damage it as you will need it for reattachment later.

  • Remove the three mounting screws which attach the instrument cluster to the dashboard. Slide the panel half way out of the dashboard.

  • Place your hand round the back of the instrument cluster and remove the electrical connector attached to the back. Slide the panel fully out of the dash. Unscrew the broken bulbs from the panel and discard them in the trash or recycling. Insert the new bulbs by screwing them in to the dash in a clockwise direction until they are tightly in place.

  • Reattach the instrument panel and the cowl trim into the dashboard, following the removal steps in reverse. Turn on the engine to check that all the bulbs are now working correctly and the instruments are clearly visible.
