How to Replace a 1997 Dodge Stratus Fuel Pump

The 1997 Dodge Stratus uses an in-tank fuel pump, which is common for most modern cars. Fortunately, the Stratus has a convenient access point under the back seat. Removing the fuel tank is not required when replacing the fuel pump, but removing and replacing the fuel pump is a fairly difficult task if you aren't familiar with automotive repair.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Shop rags
  • Socket wrench
  • New fuel pump
  • Turn your Stratus's engine off, and remove the gas cap from the fuel filler neck.

  • Remove the lower part of the back seat cushion by pulling it forward and out of the vehicle. Underneath the seat you'll find two access panels: one in the middle and one on the side.

  • Remove the four screws from side access panel and open it. Unplug the fuel pump harness inside. Start the engine, and let it run until it dies. This releases the fuel pressure, making it safe to begin the fuel pump replacement procedure.

  • Open your hood, and remove the negative cable from the battery.

  • Wrap the two hoses on the fuel pump assembly with shop rags to soak up any spilled fuel, and disconnect them. Remember to note as to how the hoses connected to the fuel pump so you can correctly connect them to the new one.

  • Remove the three fuel pump mounting nuts with your socket wrench. Grasp the fuel pump, and carefully lift it out of the access hole.

  • Insert the new fuel pump assembly into the access hole. Line up the three seal points around the perimeter of the access hole with the fuel pump mounting nuts. Tighten the fuel pump nuts.

  • Reattach the fuel pump hoses to the correct ports. Reattach the electrical fuel pump harness to the new fuel pump. Reconnect the negative battery cable, and replace the gas cap.

  • Crank the Stratus's engine. Check the fuel pump connections for leaks. If everything is okay, turn the engine off, replace the access cover and tighten the screws. Remount the rear seat cushion by pushing it down and rearward.
