Ford Motor Company used a cylinder pawl type ignition switch on their 1993 F-150 trucks. This multi-position switch controls power for the ignition circuit, starter and accessories. The switch also controls the steering lock which engages when the switch is turned to the "Off" or "Accessories" position. A key code issued to the truck at the Ford factory is used to order a new key. Cylinder replacement becomes necessary if the key code is lost or the cylinder is damaged.
Open the hood. Loosen the battery's negative terminal clamp bolt with a wrench. Twist the terminal clamp slightly on the battery post to release it and pull the terminal clamp off the post.
Remove the steering column trim shroud screws with a screwdriver and pull the shrouds off the steering column.
Insert the key in the switch and turn it to the "Run" position. Locate the retainer pin hole in the switch casting under the steering column.
Insert a 1/8-inch drill bit into the retainer pin hole and depress the spring-loaded retainer pin. Pull the lock out of the casting while keeping pressure on the retainer pin.
Insert a key into the new cylinder. Turn the switch to the "Run" position.
Depress the retainer pin in the new cylinder and slide it into the steering column. Ensure that the cylinder is properly seated in the switch and turn the switch to the "Off" position to extend the retainer pin into position.
Install the battery negative cable. Push the terminal clamp onto the battery negative post. Tighten the terminal clamp securely with a wrench.
Test the switch. Ensure that the switch functions properly in all positions. Reassemble the steering column shrouds. Install and tighten the shroud screws securely with a screwdriver.
