How to Replace the Air Fuel Ratio Sensor on a 2001 Camry

The air-to-fuel ratio sensor, also called a mass airflow sensor, monitors the airflow coming through the air intake on your 2001 Camry. This sensor determines the air-to-fuel ratio by calculating the airflow rate. When this sensor fails, your vehicle will have a hard time running and may misfire, stall or refuse to start. Replacement sensors can be costly for the Camry, but the part is generally available from most auto parts stores and can be replaced by anyone with a set of tools and an interest in saving money.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Open the hood and locate the small black sensor on the throttle body of the Camry on the rear left side of the engine. This sensor will be cylindrical and will have a wire coming from it.

  • Unplug the electrical connector running to the sensor.

  • Unscrew the Phillips-head screws that secure the sensor to the throttle body.

  • Pull the sensor off the throttle body. Insert the new sensor.

  • Secure the sensor with the factory mounting screws and reconnect the electrical connector.
