How to Change the Fuel Pump on a 2002 Mustang GT

When changing the electric fuel pump on a 2002 Mustang GT, if possible, run the engine until the fuel is low in the fuel tank. If the pump has completely failed, the tank should be drained to no more than a quarter tank of fuel. This will prevent a gasoline spill when the tank is dropped down and tilted. Check the fuse and relay before condemning the pump.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • Set of deep well 3/8-inch drive sockets
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Common screwdriver
  • Raise the back of the car and support it on jack stands positioned under the frame so they do not interfere with the removal of the tank. Drain the fuel tank if it is over half full. Insert a fuel hose into the fuel tank and drain the fuel into a gas can.

  • Disconnect the fuel pump electrical harness directly behind the fuel tank. Loosen the clamp on the fuel filler hose on the end away from the tank, using a screwdriver. Place the floor jack under the fuel tank for support.

  • Remove the two fuel tank support straps by removing the bolts to the rear of the strap, using the appropriate deep well socket. Lower the tank carefully, making sure to pull the fuel tank filler hose off the metal filler neck attached to the body. Lower the tank just enough to disconnect the fuel lines to the fuel pump. There is the main fuel line, the return line and the vent line. Just squeeze the connectors and they pull apart. Lower the tank the rest of the way.

  • Remove the nuts around the circumference of the fuel pump, using a 10mm socket. Lift the fuel pump cartridge up enough to gain access to the plastic retainer clips, squeeze the clips inward and pull the pump up and out of the tank.

  • Install the new pump in reverse order of removal.
