Chevrolet Camaros come equipped from the factory with two rear shocks, one on each rear wheel. These shock absorbers dampen the up and down motion of the rear axle, as the vehicle travels over rough surfaces. Over time, the seals inside the shock absorbers may leak and lessen the performance of these shocks. Replacing the rear shocks on a Camaro is a straightforward process, which can easily be accomplished by the vehicle owner.
Place wood blocks or wheel chocks in front and behind both of the front wheels.
Loosen each lug nut on the two rear wheels using a lug wrench. Do not turn any of the lug nuts more that one full turn.
Raise the rear of the vehicle. Place a floor jack underneath the differential and raise the rear axle until the rear wheels are two to three inches off the ground.
Position axle stands underneath the rear axle tubes and lower the floor jack.
Unscrew the lug nuts on the rear wheels, using a lug wrench. Lift the wheels off the axles and set them out of the way.
Unscrew the single nut that secures the shock rod on the bottom of the shock absorber to the leaf or coil spring. Use a socket to unscrew the nut.
Unscrew the two bolts that secure the top of the shock to the inner fender well.
Pull the shock out of the inner fender well with your hand, and remove it from the vehicle.
Lift the new shock absorber into place between the rear axle and the chassis.
Screw in the two bolts that secure the top of the shock absorber to the inner fender well, using a socket.
Slide a new shock bushing onto the shock rod.
Insert the bottom of the shock absorber through the mounting hole in the leaf spring plate or control arm.
Slide a new shock bushing and flat washer onto the shock rod on the underside of the leaf spring plate or control arm.
Screw on the nut that retains the shock rod, using a socket.
Lift the wheels onto the rear axles. Then, screw on the lug nuts using a lug wrench.
Lower the rear of the vehicle.
Retighten the lug nuts, using a lug wrench.
