How to Remove the Push-In Shifter in a Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevrolet Camaro is a classic American sports car sold between 1967 and 2002, and brought back for the 2010 year model. Camaros made between 1982 and 2002 had push-in shifters for the automatic transmission between the bucket seats. The gear shifts had a large button on top that the driver would push to change gears.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Park the vehicle on level ground and engage the parking brake. Disconnect the negative battery cable with pliers.

  • Turn the ignition key to the on position, and put your foot on the brake to unlock the shifter. Bring your shifter down to the neutral setting, making sure parking brake is set first.

  • Use the flat head screwdriver to remove the C-clip from the front of the gear shift head. When the clip is removed, twist the shifter counter clockwise to remove it.

  • Begin removing the console to access the shifter. Remove the two screws in the center armrest storage and the two screws in the cup holder. Remove the two screws on the side of the console in the storage compartment below the radio.

  • Lift the console from the vehicle, and remove the electrical connections. Set the console aside; keep your hardware together for re-installation.

  • Remove the mounting plate around the gear shifter, then remove the shifter.
