How to Change a Serpentine Belt on a 2000 Monte Carlo

The 2000 Chevy Monte Carlo came with either the 3.4 Liter V-6 or the more sporty 3.8 Liter V-6 engine, each with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The 2000 Monte Carlo brought back some of the 1970s feel to the design, incorporating a more sleek look and a lower profile hood. All models came equipped with anti-lock disc brakes. The Monte Carlo is renowned for its acceleration and steering/handling capabilities.

Things You'll Need

  • Tensioner bar or socket wrench with a breaker bar
  • Park the car on a flat, stable surface. Open the hood.

  • Place the tensioner bar on the tensioner pulley. The pulley is in the front of the engine, right behind the fan, near the uppermost part of the engine. The pulley sits alone on the serpentine belt. The tensioner bar has a square peg that fits into a square hole on the pulley.

  • Pull the bar to pull the pulley to release tension on the belt, and remove the belt. If your engine does not have a diagram of the serpentine belt, draw one of your own, noting the path of the belt. Make sure to denote where the belt goes over or under a specific piece of the system.

  • Pull the bar to remove the tension on the pulley once again, and string the belt along its path. Release the bar and the pulley will put tension on the installed belt.
