How to Replace a PCV Valve in a 2005 Sunfire

The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve is an emission reduction valve found on modern vehicles. Replacing the PCV valve on your Pontiac Sunfire is simple and quick. A replacement PCV valve can be obtained for around $20, and few tools are required. The procedure will be the same for all Sunfire and Cavalier models from 1995 to 2005 that are equipped with the 2.2L Ecotec four-cylinder engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Loosen the nut around the negative (-) battery cable, then pull the cable away from the terminal.

  • Locate the PCV valve on the center-left part of the engine bay, towards the firewall and windshield.

  • Use a pair of pliers to loosen the locking nut from the PCV valve. Once it is loose, continue unscrewing it with your hand until it is out.

  • Slide the locking nut off and detach the PCV valve from the hose. The PCV valve is easily removed by pulling it out.

  • Insert the new PCV valve into the hose. Make sure it is secure. Slide the locking nut back into position, then insert the PCV valve and nut back into the intake side of the engine.

  • Tighten the nut with your hand, then turn it once with the pliers. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
