How to Fix Chrome Rims

Chrome rims need to be maintained regularly to prevent damage to the rims. Without regular maintenance, the rims may start to crack or scratch or the chrome plating might chip. If the plating chips, the only way to fix it is to have the rim professionally re-plated. While re-plating is not something you can do at home, fixing small scratches and scuffs is something that can be fixed using a special polish made for chrome.

Things You'll Need

  • Chrome polish
  • Buffing rags
  • Lint-free towels
  • Soap
  • Water
  • Sponge
  • Clean the chrome rim with soap and water using a sponge.

  • Dry the rim with a lint-free towel.

  • Inspect the rim for any tarnishing, swirl marks or scratches.

  • Apply a liberal amount of chrome polish to the rims.

  • Work the polish into the rims using buffing rags. When polishing chrome, work the buffing rags clockwise or counterclockwise into the chrome. Always use a circular motion when polishing.

  • Wipe the polish off the rims with a lint-free towel once you have removed all of the swirls, scratches and tarnish from your chrome rims.
