How to Remove Ignition Tumblers

The ignition tumblers and the lock cylinder of an ignition lock are a sealed unit. When you remove the ignition tumblers, you must remove the casing along with it. Normally, the only time you must remove the ignition tumbler assembly is when the ignition lock no longer works because the tumblers have become jammed or have seized.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Pin punch
  • Use the screwdriver to remove the screws on the sides of the steering column that hold the column cover in place.

  • Remove the screws underneath the steering column that hold the bottom of the cover in place.

  • Pull the bottom half of the steering column cover down with your hands.

  • Slide the pin punch into the hole at the bottom of the ignition tumbler assembly (which is now exposed with the cover removed).

  • Apply upward pressure on the pin, and pull the ignition tumbler out of the steering column.
