How to Replace a Miata Fuel Filter

The Mazda Miata was introduced in late 1989 and has gone on to become the best-selling roadster of all time, according to the "Guinness Book of World Records." The Miata has developed a cult following over the years for its precise handling, reliability and easy maintenance. The fuel filter on 1990 to 2005 Miatas (known as NA and NB models) must be serviced every five years or every 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. 2006 and newer models do not have a serviceable fuel filter.

Things You'll Need

  • Ramps
  • Jack and jack stands (optional)
  • Wheel blocks
  • Shop rags
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Socket wrench (10mm)
  • Replacement fuel filter
  • Lift and support the rear of your Miata. Feel free to use ramps or a floor jack and jack stands. Either way, make sure the car is parked on a flat surface (concrete or asphalt), and block off the front wheels.

  • Remove the gas cap to begin relieving fuel system pressure. Crank the engine, and remove the fuel pump relay with the engine at idle. The relay is in the fuse box near the steering column. Wait for the engine to sputter and shut off.

  • Access the fuel filter cover underneath the passenger side of the rear bumper. Remove the screws from the cover, and set it aside.

  • Wrap the rag around the two fuel filter line hose clamps, and remove the clamps. Separate the fuel filter from the two lines (wrap a towel around it while removing it), pull out the bolts from the filter mounting bracket and discard the old fuel filter.

  • Insert the new fuel filter in the exact position the old one was in. Reattach the fuel lines, and tighten the hose clamps. Replace the mounting bolts on the mounting bracket.

  • Replace the fuel pump relay and the gas cap. Turn the ignition key on for a few seconds, then turn it off. Repeat this a few times to re-pressurize the fuel system. Crank the engine and let it run.

  • Inspect the fuel filter for leaks. If no leaks are apparent, turn the engine off and replace the fuel filter cover. If there are leaks, make sure the two hoses are properly tightened and attached.
