How to Remove a Headlamp Relay

Headlamps provide frontal lighting for our vehicles while we drive. Headlamps are especially useful during night driving and rainy weather. Headlamps are powered by a relay rather than a fuse; a faulty relay could keep your headlamp from working correctly.

Things You'll Need

  • Gloves
  • Turn your engine off and pop your hood.

  • Locate the the engine bay fuse box in your vehicle. Front-wheel drive vehicles will usually have the fuse box mounted on the driver's side; rear-wheel drive vehicles will usually have it mounted on the passenger's side. Remove the fuse box cover panel.

  • Look at the diagram to determine the location of the headlamp relay. Most vehicles have separate relays for the high-beam and low-beam, so you will need to determine which one you want to remove.

  • Pull up on the relay to remove it from the fuse box. Installation is the reverse of removal.
