How to Install a Side View Mirror on a Toyota Prius

The Prius took Japan by storm when it was introduced in 1998, but it wouldn't see U.S. shores until 2001. The Toyota Prius is typically regarded as the most successful hybrid vehicle in the world. Replacing the side view mirror on a Prius requires only common tools and a little mechanical aptitude.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Trim panel tool
  • Socket wrench
  • Replacement side mirror
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable for safety. Every Prius is equipped with power side mirrors, so you will be working with electrical components. Disconnecting the battery cable will prevent electrical shock.

  • Remove the sail panel on the upper interior door panel. Use the trim panel tool to help pry it off, or just use your hands. There are two clips holding the sail panel. If your Prius is equipped with the JBL sound system, you will need to disconnect the connection for the tweeter mounted in the sail panel.

  • Disconnect all electrical modules. All models will have at least one for the power mirror switch; some models will have an extra connection for heated mirrors.

  • Secure the side mirror with your hand and use the socket wrench to remove the two bolts mounting the mirror. Remove the mirror and set aside.

  • Mount the new side mirror in its place and tighten the two bolts. Reconnect any electrical modules you removed and replace the sail pan trim. Reconnect your negative battery cable.
