How to Replace an Oil Pressure Sensor in a Grand Caravan

The oil pressure sensor on your Grand Caravan is designed to protect your engine from major mechanical damage. The signal from the sensor lets you know the oil pressure is at the appropriate level. When this pressure drops, however, your vehicle computer shuts off power to the fuel pump to protect the engine. You can replace a bad oil pressure sensor in a matter of minutes on your Caravan and keep your engine protected.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench Floor jack and 2 jack stands Drain pan Open-ended wrench or oil-pressure sensor socket New engine oil if necessary

Remove the Oil Pressure Sensor

  • Detach the black, negative battery cable using a wrench.

  • Raise the front of your Grand Caravan using a floor jack and support it on two jack stands.

  • Locate the oil pressure sensor near the engine oil pan and next to the oil filter.

  • Position a drain pan under the oil pressure sensor.

  • Unplug the electrical connector from the oil pressure sensor by pulling the connector with your hand.

  • Unscrew the oil pressure sensor using an open-ended wrench or a ratchet and oil-pressure sensor socket.

  • Remove the pressure sensor from the vehicle.

Installing the New Oil Pressure Sensor

  • Start the new oil pressure sensor by hand to avoid thread damage. Then tighten the pressure sensor using the open wrench or the oil-pressure sensor socket. Make sure not to over tighten the sensor.

  • Plug the electrical connector into the oil pressure sensor.

  • Lower your vehicle.

  • Pull the oil dipstick and make sure the oil level is between the "Add" and "Full" marks or at the middle of the crosshatch area. Add engine oil if necessary.

  • Turn on the engine and check for oil leaks.
