How to Replace the Rear View Mirror on a Toyota 4Runner

The rear view mirror on a Toyota 4Runner is an essential safety component in your vehicle. The mirror is held in place with adhesive. Over time, humidity or accidentally hitting it may knock it loose. Once the mirror is dislocated, you must go through the process of replacing it, which, fortunately, is not very difficult.

Things You'll Need

  • Solvent for removing adhesive Clean cloth Wax crayon or marking pencil Flat bladed scraper or razor blade Flat head screwdriver Pliers Scissors Mirror reattachment kit
  • Scrape the windshield where the old mirror used to be with the razor blade or scraper. Make sure that you remove as much of the old adhesive as possible.

  • Clean the rear view mirror area with solvent. To do this, pour some of the solvent into a clean cloth and wipe the area to remove any remaining residue.

  • Remove the U-shaped attachment button from the back of the mirror with a pair of pliers.

  • Clean the attachment button thoroughly with solvent to remove all of the remaining adhesive and any residue.

  • Clean the back of the mirror itself with solvent.

  • Test fit the attachment button on the windshield where you want the mirror to be placed and trace around the button with the wax crayon or pencil. Make sure that the button is facing upward when you mark its location.

  • Apply the activator from the reattachment kit to the windshield. You can apply the activator liberally, just make sure you are getting good, even coverage.

  • Apply a small dab of adhesive to the back of the U-shaped button.

  • Press the side of the button with adhesive on it against the windshield where you applied the activator. Make sure that you place the button with the curved end facing up. When the adhesive comes in contact with the activator, the activator will create a strong bond with the attachment button. This will make it extremely difficult to remove.

  • Wait 1 hour for the adhesive to cure/dry.

  • Press the back of the mirror against the front of the button until you hear a "snap". The mirror is now reattached.
