How to Remove a Blower Motor

The blower motor on most vehicles is under the passenger side of the dash, in the area of the glove compartment. The blower motors speeds are controlled by a blower motor resister located in the immediate proximity of the blower motor. It is usually just to the left of the motor. It can be identified by its shape and plug. It is a flat plate about 1 inch by 2 inches. It has a plug with at least five to six wires. This is usually, but not always, the reason for a blower motor failure to operate. The blower motor should be checked first for power before replacing (use a circuit tester). If there is no power, the problem is elsewhere.

Things You'll Need

  • Circuit tester Set of ¼-inch set of sockets ¼-inch ratchet Phillips screwdriver
  • Take the lower dash cover off that covers everything under the dash. Use a 7mm socket and ratchet to remove the screws. Look under the dash and see if the bottom of the blower motor can be seen easily and that the glove compartment does not interfere. The blower motor bottom can be seen as a round plate with four to 5 small 7mm or smaller screws.

  • Pull the electrical plug out of the starter motor. It can be seen clearly on the bottom of the motor. Use the fingers to squeeze and withdraw the plug from its socket.

  • Use a 7mm socket and ratchet to remove the screws that surround the blower motor circumference. Pull the blower motor out by hand carefully since there is a plastic fan attached to it. It may be necessary to grab the floor rug with your hands and peel it back with the padding to make room for the fan to come all the way out. The blower motor will have to be angled rearward to remove.

  • Using a 10mm socket and ratchet, remove the nut holding the fan onto the shaft. Take the fan off of the motor shaft by wobbling it side to side to get it loose, and pull it off.

  • Put the fan on the shaft of the new blower motor and slide it all the way down the shaft. Put the nut on the motor shaft that will hold the fan on, and tighten it with the 10mm socket and ratchet. Put the assembly back in, in reverse order of removal.
