How to fold down the windshield of a Jeep Wrangler JK

The Jeep Wrangler JK windshield does fold down; however, this is a trait maintained through more tradition than anything else. The original World War II Jeeps had the windshield down for two reasons: They were folded to prevent sun reflection and to fire weapons forward as the need presented itself. Folding the windshield while on the beach, or during a similar activity, can be a different experience. When the windshield is folded, the crossbar is removed, which compromises any structural integrity in a rollover.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • 13 mm socket
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Number 40 Torx

Lower the Windshield

  • Remove the nut securing the windshield wiper arm to the motor using a 13 mm socket and ratchet. Lift off the wiper arms. Remove all the Torx bolts in the body-to-window frame bracket on both sides of the window.

  • Remove the sun visors by extracting the Phillips screws in their bases. Remove the three Torx bolts that secure the cross bar to the top of the windshield on both sides.

  • Lower the windshield. Remove the three Torx bolts in the lower part of the cross bar bracket above the door speakers and the two above the overhead seat belt. Lift the cross bar out of the vehicle.

Raise the Windshield

  • Install the cross bar and align the bolt holes in the lower bracket. Insert the Torx bolts but do not tighten any part of this until all are assembled. Insert the upper Torx bolts by the overhead seat belt.

  • Raise the windshield and insert the overhead Torx bolts behind the sun visor location. Install the side windshield support brackets and Torx bolts. Tighten all the Torx bolts securely.

  • Install the windshield wiper arms and retaining nuts. Install the sun visors and the Phillips screws.
