How to Drain a Lincoln LS Fuel Tank

The fuel tank in your Lincoln LS is a gasoline reservoir. Gas is pumped from the fuel tank through the gas line and then into the fuel injector system. You may need to replace your fuel filter (inside the tank) or fuel pump at some point at these are wear parts. Whatever the reason for accessing the fuel tank, you will first need to drain it.

Things You'll Need

  • Siphon tubing/hose and pump kit
  • Large pan
  • Release the gas tank latch and open the gas tank door.

  • Unscrew the gas cap and set it aside.

  • Insert the siphon hose down into the gas tank in the same way that you would insert the nozzle on a gas pump to fill up your tank.

  • Attach the pump to the end of the hose. In most cases, this is just a small rubber ball-looking object that you squeeze to create vacuum pressure. However, you may also use an electric motor-driven pump. You should insert the other tubing from the siphon kit on the other end of the pump.

  • Gently squeeze the pump (or turn on the electric pump). You should see gasoline being sucked out of the gas tank. Make sure the gasoline is being pumped into the large pan and not on the ground. Eventually the flow of gasoline will stop.

  • Check to make sure all of the gasoline is out of the tank by attempting to start the car. If it does start, there may be a small amount of gasoline that the siphon and pump were not able to pick up. Let your vehicle run until it stalls out.
