How to Change a Jeep Liberty Transmission Filter

The Jeep Liberty transmission filter prevents build up of debris such as heavy metals in the transmission of the vehicle. Fluid is strained through the filter as it cycles throughout the engine, with impurities being caught in the mesh and the transmission fluid passing through. The filter has to be changed every 40,000 miles to keep the fluid fresh. Neglecting this change can lead to grinding of your gears and build up in the engine. This maintenance requires only a few tools and about 45 minutes of work to complete.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 jack stands
  • 1/2 inch socket wrench
  • 5 quart collection pan
  • 3/8 inch socket wrench
  • New transmission filter
  • Funnel
  • Transmission fluid
  • Lift the front of the Liberty up on a pair of jack stands when it is parked on a level surface. Wait 30 minutes until the engine is cool. Test to see if it's cool enough to work on by placing a hand on the engine hood: it should feel cool to the touch.

  • Go underneath the vehicle and find the transmission drain pan in the center of the engine. The drain pan is a tank surrounded by eight bolts. Put a collection pan underneath the drain pan to catch transmission fluid.

  • Take out all but one of the bolts using the 1/2 inch socket wrench and allow the pan to drain until it is dripping slowly. Remove the last bolt and lower the remaining fluid into the collection pan.

  • Remove the three bolts fastening the filter beneath the drain pan with the 3/8 inch socket wrench. Pull the filter off and put the new filter in its place. Attach the filter using the old bolts. Replace the drain pan and lower the Liberty from the jack stands.

  • Open the hood and pull out the yellow transmission dipstick. Place a funnel into the tube and pour in 3 quarts of transmission fluid. Close the hood.
