How to Install a New Steering Rack in a Mitsubishi Galant

Mitsubishi first released the Galant in 1969 and the car remains in production after nine generations. Over the years, the Galant evolved from a compact sedan to a mid-sized four door and has sold more than five million units. The current generation comes with power rack and pinion steering, but it can be difficult to access and tedious to replace. Installing a new rack takes about an afternoon.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Transmission jack
  • O-ring for pressure and return tubes
  • Center your front wheels. Remove the key. Unhook your battery and drain the steering fluid. Take off the front undercover.

  • Remove the following components in order: the center crossmember and lower arm assembly; air bag; steering wheel, steering column lower cover and clock spring; floor console; front scuff plate, cowl side trim and the cover to the trunk lid opener; accelerator pedal stopper and front floor carpet.

  • Uncouple the stabilizer link and stabilizer bar before removing the steering shaft pad. Disconnect the column and rack connection then pull the connecting bolt to the rear roll stopper. Pull the front axle crossmember bracket and nuts and bolts connecting the return and pressure tube clamps (return tube first). Disconnect the hoses from the gear and dispose of the O-rings.

  • Unhook the pinch clamp. Use pliers to grip the shaft clip on the steering column. Pull the shaft upward to disengage. If you remove the shaft by accident, remove the entire steering column in order to reinsert it.

  • Look near the floor hole for three body panel clips (they will be next to the steering column). Loosen the clips. Support the crossmember with your transmission jack while you remove the mounting bolts and nuts. Lower the crossmember first (with the rear roll stopper); then lower the stabilizer bar and rack assembly.

  • Remove the dash panel cover behind the steering column to access the steering rack bracket. Remove the bracket and retaining bolts then pull the rack away. Attach the replacement rack along with the clamp and mounting bolts. Check to make sure the rack is centered and reconnect the joint assembly.
