How to Replace Front Disc Brakes in a Chrysler Town & Country

Whether your 2001 through 2005 model Chrysler Town and Country is used to shuttle clients around or to transport the family to school and extra curricular activities, there is a big problem if you come to a screeching halt when you press the brakes. Because of this you need to replace the front disc brakes on your Chrysler Town and Country.

Things You'll Need

  • Turkey baster, syringe or similar tool
  • Brake pads
  • Brake fluid
  • Silicone grease
  • C-clamp or similar tool
  • Mechanic's wire
  • Torque wrench
  • Park the Chrysler Town and Country on a flat surface. Put the emergency brake on and put wedges behind the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Drain two thirds of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.

  • Remove the wheel, front brake caliper bolts and the brake caliper. In order to remove the caliper slowly slide it up and off the adapter and brake rotor. Using mechanic's wire suspend the caliper from the frame. Ensure that the caliper does not hang from the brake hose. This may damage the hose. Remove the brake pads from the caliper

  • Using a C-clamp compress the caliper piston into the bore. To protect the piston insert a suitable wedge, like a piece of wood or similar object between the caliper piston and the C-clamp. Remove the outboard pad from the caliper. Using a little force, gently pry the brake pad retaining clip off of the caliper.

  • Slide the brake pad off the caliper. Remove the inboard pad from the caliper. Using a gentle force, pull the brake pad away from the caliper piston. Ensure that the caliper piston is retracted into the caliper assembly piston bore. If protective paper is present, remove it from off of the noise suppression gaskets on the new disc brake pads.

  • Install the new inboard disc brake pad. Press the pad firmly into the caliper piston. The new inboard pad must fit against the face of the brake caliper piston. Install the outboard brake pad. Slide the brake pad onto the caliper assembly. Install the brake caliper assembly over the brake rotor and onto the steering knuckle adapter.

  • Install the caliper guide pin bolts. Using a torque wrench, torque the caliper guide pin bolts to 35 foot/pounds on 2002 to 2004 models or 26 foot/pounds on 2005 models. Add brake fluid to the master cylinder. Bleed the brakes. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery.

  • Start the engine and pump the brakes 3 to 4 times to seat the brake pads. Reinstall the wheels. Test drive the Town and Country at slow-to-moderate speeds to ensure that the maintenance was performed correctly.
