How to Choose the Oil and Fluids for a Dodge Durango

The Dodge Durango full-size SUV, in production since 1998, shares many maintenance characteristics with other Dodge and Chrysler vehicles. The vehicles' similarities include a heavy reliance on Mopar fluids. These steps apply to all model years of the Dodge Durango.

Things You'll Need

  • SAE 5W30 engine oil
  • Mopar DOT 3 brake fluid
  • Mopar ATF+4 automatic transmission fluid
  • SAE 75W90 GL-5 multipurpose type gear lubricant
  • SAE 75W140 synthetic gear lubricant
  • Mopar 5 year formula antifreeze
  • Change your oil at regular maintenance intervals, using SAE 5W30 API certified engine oil. The oil you choose must meet material standard MS 6395.

  • Fill your brake fluid reservoir, as necessary, with Mopar DOT 3, SAE J1703 brake fluid. As with many other Dodge vehicles, DOT 4 brake fluid may be substituted if DOT 3 isn't available.

  • Maintain a variety of your vehicle's fluids with Mopar ATF+4 automatic transmission fluid. These include your automatic transmission, the transfer case and the power steering reservoir.

  • Use SAE 75W90 GL-5 multipurpose type gear lubricant in the front axle of your Dodge Durango. The rear axle requires SAE 75W140 synthetic gear lubricant, and the two shouldn't be interchanged.
