How to Replace an Oil Pressure Sensor in a 2000 Dodge Durango

Oil pressure is so critical to the components inside your Dodge engine that the engine has an oil pressure sensor or switch located in the block. The sensor feeds information to the computer, which in turns outputs a reading to the oil pressure gauge or oil pressure light on the instrument panel of your Durango. If the sensor fails, your engine oil pressure could drop and you may never know it until internal damage occurs to the engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wrench set
  • Raise the front of your Durango off the ground with a jack and position a set of jack stands under the frame rails. Locate the oil pressure sensor on the driver’s side of the engine, just above the oil filter.

  • Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor by pushing the locking tab down, then pull the connector straight off the sensor. Do not pull on the wires--grasp the connector only so you do not damage the wiring.

  • Place a wrench on the hex shaped base of the sensor and turn the sensor counterclockwise to remove it from the block. Discard the faulty sensor and install a new sensor in its place, threading it in by hand to avoid cross threading the block or sensor.

  • Tighten the sensor by turning it clockwise with your wrench until it is snug, then turn it 1/4 turn more. Connect the wiring harness connector to the new sensor by pushing the connector onto the sensor terminals until the locking tab engages.

  • Raise the front of the Durango with a jack and remove the jack stands from under the frame rails. Lower the truck to the ground and remove the jack from under the car. Start the truck and check the oil pressure gauge to ensure it is functioning.
