How to Change the Belt Tensioner of a 2001 Ford Escort

I had a 2001 Ford Escort with a 2.0-liter SPI engine in it. After a few days of trying to ignore an annoying squealing noise coming from under the hood, I did some investigating and found that the noise was coming from the belt tensioner. Changing the belt tensioner was easier on this engine than I've seen on some other 2.0-liter engines.

  • I rotated the belt tensioner clockwise to release tension so I could slip the belt off, then I removed the bolt in the tensioner arm to take the thing off. There is a hole on the generator bracket. On reassembly, I had to make sure the pin on the back of the new belt tensioner was inserted in the hole, and then I tighten the bolt to 35 foot-pounds.
