Precautions for Servicing a Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius is a hybrid vehicle that uses both electrical power and gasoline to run its engine. What this means is that the Prius essentially has two engines: a gasoline engine (on the 2001 model it is a 1.5 liter, four-cylinder engine) and an electric motor. This system creates unique concerns when you must service the car.

"Ready" Light

  • When you insert the ignition key into your Toyota Prius, a "Ready" light or signal shows on the dashboard. When the light is on, you can drive the car even if the engine is not running. Therefore, before servicing the vehicle, remove the ignition key and ensure that the "Ready" light is not on. Failure to do so could result in serious injury or death from electrocution.

Inspect the battery and the wires for any signs of leakage. Leakage from the battery could indicate that battery acid is present, and you could be in danger of fire as well as a harm to your skin if the leakage touches your skin. Neutralize any liquid with a saturated boric acid solution.

Safety Equipment

  • For safety while working on this hybrid vehicle, it is important to wear proper safety equipment. Since you will be dealing with electrical components, wear insulated or rubber gloves. Never touch a wire or any other component on the Prius with your bare hands. In addition, wear goggles to protect your eyes, and wear rubber-soled shoes to help prevent electrocution.

Disable the High-Voltage System

  • Any time you have to service a Prius, it is a good idea to disable the high-voltage system; this is especially true before any body repairs. This procedure is relatively simple. Remember to wear insulated or rubber gloves. First, remove the negative terminal of the Prius (typically, the negative terminal is the black one and the positive terminal is the red one). Remove the service plug (located near the rear wheels, accessible via the trunk) to ensure safety. Then wait five minutes before you begin servicing the car.
