How Much Air Pressure Is Required for a 1/2-inch Air Impact Wrench?

One of the first tools that a mechanic should own is an air compressor for the purpose of powering a 1/2-inch air impact wrench. An air impact wrench is arguably the most useful tool in a shop. Using one of these tools makes tire changes, checking brakes and a multitude of other repairs faster and less tiring. However, before buying a compressor a few facts about a 1/2-inch air impact wrench should be considered.

Average air requirements

  • The air consumption of a tool is rated in two ways: the total cubic feet of air per minute the tool can be expected to use and the air pressure in pounds per square inch the tool requires. Each is important and must be known before a compressor purchase is made.
Most manufacturers of 1/2-inch impact wrenches rate their tool's power at 90 psi. This means that given an adequate volume of air at 90 psi the impact wrench will develop its full rated torque.
