How to Replace Spark Plug Wires on a Chevy Prizm

Spark plug wires are an essential part of your Chevrolet Prizm's performance. The spark plug wires are connected to the spark plugs and bring the electrical spark in order to ignite the fuel inside the engine's cylinders. A damaged spark plug wire can make your car run rough and affect gas mileage. You can replace your spark plug wires easily.

Things You'll Need

  • New spark plug wires
  • Allow the engine to cool down for 20 minutes before you begin working under the hood of your Chevy Prizm.

  • Open the hood and identify the spark plug wires. In a Chevy Prizm the spark plug wires are black.

  • Your new spark plug wires will be labeled in order of length; lay them out accordingly.

  • Begin at one end of your Chevy Prizm's engine. Remove only the first spark plug wire by pulling on the boot of the plug wire until the wire pops off.

  • Remove the other end of the same wire from the distributor cap by pulling on the end of the wire.

  • Inspect the spark plug while you have the wire disconnected. A good spark plug will be lightly coated with grayish brown deposits. A damaged or bad spark plug will look black or have visible damage. If the spark plug is damaged, you should replace it to keep your engine running smoothly.

  • Replace the old wires in sequence with new spark plug wires of the same length or number. Most cars have a small plastic piece with slots that hold the wires in place, to avoid having them hit each other or a part of the engine. Be sure to insert each new wire firmly into its slot. The wire will make a quiet pop when it snaps onto the spark plug.
